SGMUN 4.0: Swostishree Gurukul’s Student-Led Conference United Youth for Global Dialogue and Diplomacy
Kathmandu, Nepal
July 9, 2025
Swostishree Gurukul Model United Nations (SGMUN) 4.0 successfully concluded on July 7, marking three days of powerful dialogue, debate, and diplomacy among students from over 30 schools across Nepal. With more than 40 sponsors backing the event, this year’s edition reaffirmed its role as one of the nation’s leading student-led Model UN platforms.
The conference officially opened on July 4 with a vibrant ceremony featuring Ms. Simrika Sharma, Head of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Kathmandu, as keynote speaker. Ms. Sharma reflected on the UN's 80th anniversary and 70 years of presence in Nepal, telling students, “Diplomacy is not just about suits and meetings; it's about meeting and communicating with people you don’t agree with.” Chief Guests Mr. Chewan Rai, Managing Director of Che&Co, and Ms. Reshmi Sunar from UNFPA Nepal, further inspired delegates with powerful personal narratives and a call to challenge the status quo.
From the onset, SGMUN 4.0 showcased Swostishree Gurukul’s core mission—empowering young voices in global discourse. Over three days, students simulated real UN committees, tackling pressing international issues with professionalism and passion.
The closing ceremony was graced by the chief guest and keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Samrat Thapa from the University of Lynchburg. Dr. Thapa lauded the delegates' diplomatic engagement, stating, “MUN develops skills that last a lifetime—critical thinking, diplomacy, and the courage to speak up.” The Closing ceremony was joined by special guest Unish Bikram Shahi Thakuri, an Under-19 cricketer and Karnali Yaks (NPL) player.
Principal Ms. Neha KC delivered closing remarks, celebrating this year’s inclusion of MUN first-timers and applauding student leadership. “The way our students collaborated and solved problems proves how meaningful youth dialogue can be,” she said. “This isn’t just an event—it's a training ground for future leaders.”
The ceremony concluded with awards recognising outstanding contributions in each committee and heartfelt appreciation for the student organizers. Director Secretary General Adhish Binod Pokharel (Grade 12) and Deputy General Secretary Zenith Karki (Grade 10) were instrumental in the event's success, continuing Swostishree Gurukul’s legacy of excellence, including international representation at WIMUN New York and visits to the UN headquarters.
SGMUN 4.0 stood as a vibrant testament to youth potential, innovation, and the power of thoughtful discourse, nurturing not just future diplomats, but globally aware citizens ready to lead with empathy, intellect, and integrity.
